Preview: I ran the BACS conference in 1993 and 2012; the former as President, and the latter under the presidency of Michel Hockx. The difference between the two conferences is striking enough to indicate the changes that had taken place since the early start of the Association in 1976—when the first lot of academics from different universities were invited to go on a tour of China—to what the Association now is.
